Toshiba America Information Systems Inc. has taken advantage of the debut of Microsoft Windows XP to freshen its Satellite laptop line, replacing its game- and multimedia-ready, 1.0GHz Pentium III-powered Satellite 2805 with an even more potent 1.1GHz model at a lower price.
The Satellite 5005 combines a 1.1GHz Intel Pentium III processor with 512MB of memory, a 30GB hard disk, and combo DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive with a 15-inch, active-matrix display and Nvidia's 16MB DDR GeForce2 Go graphics accelerator. The $2,099 notebook comes with modem, Ethernet, and IEEE 1394 ports; Secure Digital and SmartMedia memory card slots; an internal Harmon/Kardon sound system with built-in subwoofer; and Windows XP Home Edition.
Toshiba's slim, swappable-bay Satellite 3005 (see HwC review) has also been updated with Windows XP Home Edition; a model with a 1.0GHz Pentium III, 256MB of SDRAM, 20GB hard disk, and 14.1-inch TFT screen is $1,699. The entry-level, DVD-equipped Satellite 1805 is $1,199 with a 1.0GHz Celeron CPU and 13.3-inch display; $1,399 with 1.0GHz Pentium III and 14.1-inch display; or $1,799 with 1.0GHz P-III, 15-inch display, and DVD/CD-RW combo drive.
Toshiba has also updated its Windows 2000-based business portable line. The thin and light (5.3 pounds) Tecra 9000 ($3,329) features Intel's fastest new 1.2GHz mobile Pentium III-M processor, a 14.1-inch TFT display, and both 10/100Mbps conventional and 11Mbps WiFi wireless Ethernet ports, as well as a built-in Bluetooth antenna. The 4.4-pound Portege 4000 features a Slim SelectBay compatible with Tecra 9000 peripherals; it too has both WiFi and Bluetooth antennas in its lid. A 750MHz Pentium III system with 256MB of SDRAM, 30GB hard disk, and DVD-ROM drive is $2,429.
