New Line Includes Combination Firewall and Antivirus Package
McAfee Consumer Products, a division of Computer Associates, has Microsoft's blessing -- the "Designed for Windows XP" logo -- on its new personal and home office security and utility software. More important, most of its new products include firewall protection against Internet snoops and hackers.
Available October 7, 2001, the new line includes McAfee VirusScan 6.0 ($40) and VirusScan Professional 6.0 ($50), which combine virus detection and removal capabilities, instant updating of virus definitions, and a firewall that offers Internet filtering and intrusion detection. The Professional version adds resident scanning for Palm OS, automatic cleanup of unnecessary files, and secure file deletion or "data shredding."
McAfee Firewall 3.0 ($30) is an intrusion detection package that features color-coded firewall alerts and customizable audible alerts to keep users aware of suspicious activities. McAfee QuickClean 2.0 ($30) offers thorough cleaning of useless files, unwanted programs, and performance-robbing junk, as well as enhanced e-mail cleanup.
Finally, McAfee Internet Security 4.0 ($70) draws on the software technology formerly in Internet Guard Dog to combine antivirus and firewall protection and intrusion detection with PGP-based encryption, cookie and ad blocking, and real-time chat and content filtering that helps families surf the Net safely.
